What are you most passionate about professionally? Personally? I am most passionate about my faith and my family.  I can honestly say that it hasn’t been easy keeping these as my top priorities and values, since I feel our culture has different values and our industry has a tendency to pull us in the wrong direction and can be very consuming if we let it. I work hard to spend more time with my wife and daughter since these formative years are some of the most important and significant and I know I won’t get this time back. When it comes to my job I feel fortunate to see it as both a calling and a profession! I hope to really care for my clients beyond just what I am engaged in for them professionally. It’s a wonderful blessing to feel like work isn’t “work” and an even greater blessing to be working alongside people I love and care for deeply. Not all family businesses are great, especially when the family dynamic struggles. We’re fortunate that we not only love each other as family, but that we like each other too! I think the deep seated respect and care we have enjoyed as a family seeps out into how we work as professionals and it’s our hope that our clients see it and feel it too.

 

What’s your biggest accomplishment? Staying married to an amazing woman for 12 almost 13 years without a doubt! It’s perhaps a bigger accomplishment for her though, having to live with me (she should get some kind of humanitarian award)! We will readily admit, it hasn’t been a fairy tale, but we’re so grateful to God and each other for the grace to persevere. By far and away the single greatest thing I have ever done! Our amazing daughter is a close second.

What problems do you consistently solve for your clients? My hope/goal each day is to help take the stress out of financial decision making. Whether it’s a big corporate decision, or something as small as finding creative ways to save more each month, we work to be so closely connected to our clients that we can understand them and how they make decisions, and then work to layout things in an easy-to-understand fashion so that they feel empowered to take action.

 

What weakness do your friends and family know you for? Sheesh, how much time do we have…. I would say those who know me best recognize I struggle in the following areas: impatient at times (which is great since we have zero traffic and the best drivers here in DC), careless at times, I can struggle with details since I tend to be more big-picture thinking and have trouble zooming in, I have trouble letting go and letting people help because I’ve long had a perfectionist mentality and always tried to do too much, and have had times in relationships when I haven’t been open enough to let people help me when things were tough. I’m sure there’s more, but that’s a start

 

What are you complimented on most in your work? Probably my passion/energy and my business process. People have said they admire my process and also the ways I can help teach others, and that they also know how deeply I care about what I do and strive to do it with excellence.

 

Why are you a  NAIFA member? Because my dear friend/mentor Ken VanValkenburgh told me I needed to “get connected and involved” 10 years ago and it was one of the best pieces of advice I have received. NAIFA is an organization uniquely dedicated to making the Financial Industry better in every respect.  It’s values are my values. As a member I feel there is no close second to the rich relationships NAIFA membership offers, exceptional leadership and professional development opportunities it provides, and there’s no one else I want in my corner representing me in the legislative arena. NAIFA has given me so much and I know without a doubt I am a better professional & person living a richer life as a result.

 

How has NAIFA made a difference in your practice/life? NAIFA has delivered exceptional value in the following 3 key areas: 1) It has made me a better leader - through things like LILI, being a Board member locally, and participating regularly in its events. 2) It has helped me be a better professional – through its rich “menu” of practice enhancers, educational workshops, opportunities to network with our industries most talented, through its conferences locally and nationally, and it’s professional develop programs. 3) It has made me a better person – as cliché as it seems when I say this, “NAIFA feels like an extended family.” The relationships I have in NAIFA are with some of the best people I know, people who I deeply admire and respect and hope to be like more each and every day. My time spent with them has raised the bar for me and it will keep it raised as long as they’ll keep me as a member.
